What is home infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy delivers medication through a needle or catheter, usually into a vein (intravenous, or IV) or just under the skin (subcutaneous). Many medications that once meant regular trips to a hospital or infusion center can now be given at home. These include immunoglobulins, long courses of IV antibiotics and biologics.
With home infusion, a specialty pharmacy delivers your medication and supplies, and an All Hours registered nurse comes to your home to give the infusion. Your nurse checks your vital signs, manages your IV line, watches for reactions and teaches you and your family what to expect. After every visit we share updates with your prescribing physician.
Benefits of receiving infusions at home
- Comfort and privacy: rest in your own chair, in your own home, with your family nearby.
- Less exposure to infection: avoid crowded waiting rooms, especially important for immunocompromised patients.
- No travel or parking: save hours every week, with no rides needed after pre-medications.
- One-on-one nursing: your nurse focuses only on you for the entire infusion.
- Earlier hospital discharge: finish IV antibiotics or other therapy at home.

Home infusion FAQs
What is home infusion therapy?
Home infusion therapy is the administration of medication through a needle or catheter, usually into a vein (IV) or under the skin (subcutaneous), in your home instead of a hospital or infusion center. A specialty pharmacy dispenses the medication and supplies, and a registered nurse comes to your home to give the infusion, monitor you and teach you and your family.
Is it safe to get IVIG or other specialty drug infusions at home?
For appropriate patients, home infusion is a well-established, safe alternative to infusion centers. Your physician decides whether home infusion is right for you. Our infusion-trained RNs follow your prescriber's orders and pre-medication protocols, check vital signs throughout, watch for infusion reactions and stay with you during the infusion as ordered.
Do you work with my specialty pharmacy?
Yes. We provide the nursing for home infusion and coordinate closely with your prescriber and the specialty or infusion pharmacy that dispenses your medication. That covers scheduling, delivery timing, lab draws, line care and visit documentation.
Does insurance cover home infusion nursing?
Coverage depends on your plan, your medication and your diagnosis. Many commercial plans and Medicare Advantage plans cover home infusion services, and Medicare Part B and Part D cover certain drugs and services. We can help you and your pharmacy understand benefits and authorizations.
How long does a home infusion visit take?
It depends on the medication. Some IV antibiotics take under an hour, while IVIG and some biologics can take four hours or more. Your nurse stays for the time your orders require, and we schedule visits around your life.
Do you care for PICC lines and ports?
Yes. Our nurses provide PICC and midline dressing changes, flushing, port access and de-access, peripheral IV starts and blood draws as ordered, and they teach patients and caregivers how to protect their line between visits.
Which areas do you provide home infusion in?
We provide home infusion nursing across Massachusetts, including Greater Boston, the North Shore and Merrimack Valley, Cape Cod and the Islands, and Western Massachusetts, and in southern New Hampshire. Call 877-406-4245 to confirm coverage for your town.
